In April 2009, Tennessee signed into law a bill that supported deregulation of landlines. This legislation promotes recognition of the growing consumer choice in the telecommunications marketplace. The bill, SB 1954/ HB 1698, enacted the Market Regulation Act of 2009, which encouraged updated telecom laws that would eliminate price regulations and support a competitive market in Tennessee, and keep costs down for consumers. In updating its telecom laws, the Tennessee legislature demonstrates a focus on consumer protection.
